New versión of LASI will take place December 12th – 16th, at the coastal city of Arica, in northern Chile at Universidad de Tarapacá.
Latin American Social Issues Summer School LASI is aimed at graduate students and young researchers. LASI offers graduate students from Latin America and abroad the opportunity to come together for a week to receive specialized instruction and supervision from internationally renowned senior social scientists. LASI focuses on relevant social issues in Latin America, which are analyzed from a global, interdisciplinary, and compared perspective.
LASI 2023 will focus on what we term Haunting social issues: Crisis, continuity and demands for change in Latin America and will be held in Arica, in the extreme north of Chile, between December 12th and 16th.
LASI Summer School is organized in a joint effort by the Center for Intercultural and Indigenous Research (CIIR), the Millennium Institute for Violence and Democracy (VioDemos), the Anthropology Department at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad de Tarapacá, Chile and is supported by the Wenner Gren Foundation.
Helene Risor, academic coordinator of LASI and associate professor of Anthropology UC, explains: “The focus on crisis, continuity, and change becomes particularly relevant when aiming to provide empirically grounded knowledge and relevant analysis of the pressing contemporary issues that afflict the continent. To elaborate on explanatory frameworks of the cycle from the “socialism of the 21st Century” to the current resurgence of authoritarianism and neo-fascism, it is essential to consider relevant questions and examine global and historical contexts that help us comprehend the current scenario”.
Manel Prieto, a member of the organizing committee and professor from the Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences at the Universidad de Tarapacá, emphasizes the significance of arranging this event in Arica. The University of Tarapacá is renowned for its excellence and is situated in an extremely unique geographical zone where the subjects taught have direct relevance to everyday life. Thus, selecting Arica as the venue for LASI not only acknowledges the capacity of delivering high-quality academia in a remote setting but also demonstrates the University’s commitment to enhancing the social sciences, particularly in addressing issues highly pertinent to the region.
In 2023, the fourth version of LASI, students will be able to share with professors from Argentina, United States, Colombia, Perú, Denmark and Chile in 7 interdisciplinary workshops. There will also be conferences and field trips.
